10. Feud: Capote vs. the Swans

After Feud: Bette and Joan, concerning the rivalry between Davis and Crawford in Previous Hollywood, Ryan Murphy’s subsequent installment of the Feud anthology is a tabloid delight, with a super-talented forged. Tom Hollander performs Truman Capote in his later years, when he was a part of an intimate circle of ladies-who-lunched-while-extravagantly-rich, socialites he referred to as his swans. Then in 1975 he revealed a thinly veiled story, La Cote Basque, by which he betrayed them by revealing their darkest secrets and techniques. Naomi Watts’ Babe Paley is, solely on the floor, an image of serene perfection. Diane Lane is the sardonic, cynical Slim Keith and Chloe Sevigny is CZ Visitor. Calista Flockhart seems as Lee Radziwill, and the late Deal with Williams is Babe’s husband, CBS tv founder William Paley. However Hollander is the revelation. On the top of his fame, this Capote is gloomy, needy, egocentric and alcoholic. Playwright Jon Robin Baitz wrote the sequence and Gus van Sant (Milk) directed many of the episodes.

Feud: Capote vs. the Swans premieres on January 31 on FX within the US
